DFI - Week 1

Reflections

It has been an explosive whirlwind of digital learning, day 1. Even though Ohaeawai Primary School is truly entrenched in the Manaiakalani pedegogy of learn, create, share, and the Google suite of apps and tools are called upon daily to support our students and make our planning/learning visible, the thought of embarking on an intensive digital course still remained slightly daunting. However, thankfully, I seemed to find my way around the daily agenda unscathed with the help of a wonderful Manaiakalani digital on-line team who shared helpful tricks and ideas around the use of Google Groups, our Google Drive and Google Docs.

Here is what I took from the day:

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Dorothy Burt and her team are inspiring! I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the origins of Manaiakalani and the journey a number of remarkable people, along with their communities, embarked upon 15 years ago. Having an understanding of the Manaiakalani journey cements the importance of supporting our tamariki to learn digitally regardless of demographic background. Knowing/embracing the Manaiakalani kaupapa, ensures I do the best that I can for my students and their futures.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Using and colour coding folders and placing all work into folders will ensure an uncluttered drive and ease of being able to find all information on a particular topic quickly at a later date.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
I have probably under used voice typing with some of my students who require extra support with getting their fabulous ideas down due to processing time when trying to find the correct keys on their keyboards.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Knowing small tricks like double clicking to pull up table properties, page setting for choosing a page colour for example will make creating docs that much faster.

Examples demonstrating my learning:

Voice Typing

Google Scavenger Hunt

Creating with Google Docs

  4. Kia ora Lisa,
I think it is such a powerful thing for us to put ourselves in our learners shoes and identify those feelings of apprehension before we start something new. And to sense that same success when we master new skills. Thank you for sharing your tasks on your blog! Remember with the create task, you can change the line colour on the table to be the same colour as your background so the table 'disappears'.
Looking forward to connecting with you again tomorrow.
    Vicki
