DFI - Week 3

Media

Kia ora,

It has been another intensive day of digital learning.  I welcomed the opportunity to set up my own Youtube account and create some of my own playlists.  I can see such huge potential having playlists set up and readily available.  Bye, bye to frantic searching for appropriate material while a classroom of students are patiently or not so patiently waiting.

Along with learning more about and having a play with Google Draw; check out the "About Me" button on the right side bar, I also enjoyed learning more about Google Slides and applying the new learning in a manner that I have not tried before.  I found "Pick a path" an engaging, interactive way to use slides.  Check out my slightly rough and not quite so ready "Pick a Path" Google Slide presentation about moving digital work into our correct folders.  I decided to explore this particular topic as many students forget to add titles and move work into the correct folders in their drives.  How can I use hapara effectively, if work is not within folders?  Tweaking and finetuning this pick a path might be just the ticket in helping students to remember to save, save, save correctly.

DFI - Week 2

Video Blog

It has been another jam packed day of DFI learning.  I felt great success in becoming a bit more familiar with setting up a Google Meet in my calendar and inviting the lovely Helen, from Maria's bubble, to join me in discussing a wonderful poem written by a year 8 student at Panmure School honouring  her Tongan ancestory.  I successfully embedded our video discussion around the beautifully written poem by Fau, above.

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
I enjoyed listening as Dorothy Burt unpacked the acronym RATE. Her explanation that digital technology is a gift of opportunity bestowed upon this teaching/learning generation is only at its' best when it has effective teaching/pedegogy behind it was so pertinent!

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
Becoming more familiar with the Google suite of tools/apps will, over time and with practice, be a huge assest in organising my thoughts, work, collaboration, etc.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Definitely being more up to the play on blogging, embedding videos, etc will be a great assest in a 1:1 digital year 5/6 classroom.
In addition, I like the idea of having all tabs pertaining to any given topic in one folder so all is just a click away.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Exploring Google Keep as a way to get share, record ideas, links, pics. This is an app I am not too familiar with but can see it having a huge impact on how I record and share information in the weeks, month ahead.

DFI - Week 1

Reflections

It has been an explosive whirlwind of digital learning, day 1. Even though Ohaeawai Primary School is truly entrenched in the Manaiakalani pedegogy of learn, create, share, and the Google suite of apps and tools are called upon daily to support our students and make our planning/learning visible, the thought of embarking on an intensive digital course still remained slightly daunting. However, thankfully, I seemed to find my way around the daily agenda unscathed with the help of a wonderful Manaiakalani digital on-line team who shared helpful tricks and ideas around the use of Google Groups, our Google Drive and Google Docs.

Here is what I took from the day:

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Dorothy Burt and her team are inspiring! I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the origins of Manaiakalani and the journey a number of remarkable people, along with their communities, embarked upon 15 years ago. Having an understanding of the Manaiakalani journey cements the importance of supporting our tamariki to learn digitally regardless of demographic background. Knowing/embracing the Manaiakalani kaupapa, ensures I do the best that I can for my students and their futures.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Using and colour coding folders and placing all work into folders will ensure an uncluttered drive and ease of being able to find all information on a particular topic quickly at a later date.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
I have probably under used voice typing with some of my students who require extra support with getting their fabulous ideas down due to processing time when trying to find the correct keys on their keyboards.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Knowing small tricks like double clicking to pull up table properties, page setting for choosing a page colour for example will make creating docs that much faster.

Examples demonstrating my learning:

Voice Typing

Google Scavenger Hunt

Creating with Google Docs
